St. Croix International Historic Site

A long history- here's the short course. A French explorer tried, and failed to set up a colony on the island. Half the men did not survive the harsh winter without access to fresh water or the mainland. They moved on shore the following year. Less secure but better survival. The island settlement is now a national park. Due to the sensitivity of the site, only researchers are allowed on the island. Goes right along with the theme of past trips- "stay on the trail"!

That's the island in the background.
